Project Usahasama Transit Ringan Automatik (PUTRA)

The LRT System 2 known as PUTRA LRT, covers a total distance of 29 km linking the eastern and western suburbs of Kuala Lumpur servicing some of Kuala Lumpur's most affluent and heavily populated areas.

It is using the Advanced Rapid Transit Mark II technology which has been successfully tested and proven in North America and Europe with a very high performance specification specially designed to meet the needs of Kuala Lumpur.

The total alignment which starts from the Depot in Lembah Subang and ends at Terminal PUTRA in Gombak is 29km in length. The construction was divided into two (2) sections: Section 1, which is from Lembah Subang Depot to Pasar Seni Station and Section 2, which is from Pasar Seni Station to Terminal PUTRA.

Featuring the state-of-the-art transport system, The PUTRA LRT operates with 35 two-car units traveling at an average of 40 km per hour. Its initial capacity of 10,000 passengers per hour per direction is expected to increase to 30,000 in the near future. All trains are fully air-conditioned and provide a service level of 90 seconds during peak hours and between 3 minutes (3) to ten (10) minutes during off-peak hours. The service is provided from 6.00 a.m until 12.00 midnight, on Monday - Saturday, and 8.00 a.m. to 11.00 p.m. on Sunday and Public Holidays.

For the convenience of commuters, PUTRA LRT provides dedicated feeder bus service within 3-km radius from each station. Bus schedules are posted at major bus stops. The operational hours coincides with the LRT operation hours.

Currently, PUTRA LRT is the world's longest, fully automatic LRT.

Sistem Transit Aliran Ringan Sdn Bhd (STAR)

The STAR system was completed in time for the Commonwealth Games that was hosted by Kuala Lumpur in 1998. About 70 per cent of spectators of the international sports event travelled to the Bukit Jalil stadium by STAR. Currently running through 25 stations covering the far corners of the Klang Valley, the system links Sentul Timur, Ampang and Sri Petaling through the city centre.

Prices for a single trip ticket range from 70 sen to RM2.90, depending on the distance and destination. The train frequencies also vary, arriving at stations every four to six minutes during peak hours (between 7.30am to 9.00am on Mondays to Saturdays and between 4.30pm and 7.30pm on Mondays to Fridays). At all other times, train frequencies are reduced to a train every six to ten minutes.

The train service starts at all stations at 6.00am. The last trains from Ampang and Sri Petaling to Sentul Timur leave at 11.30pm whereas the last trains from Sentul Timur to Ampang and Sri Petaling leave at 11.30pm.

Some stations provide feeder bus facilities from the station to nearby neighbourhoods for the convenience of the commuters. The stations providing such services are Sentul, Chan Sow Lin, Maluri, Pandan Jaya, Cempaka, Ampang, Cheras, Salak Selatan, Bukit Jalil and Sri Petaling.

Keretapi Tanah Melay (KTM)

In Malaysia, the railway network system has always been a key component in the development of the country's growth. The first railway track was built in 1885 from Taiping to Port Weld. From a mere 12.8 kilometers of track, the network grew as Malaysia developed and prospered.

KTM Berhad was corporatised on 1st August 1992 following the passing of two Railway Bills. Although still wholly-owned by the government, KTM Berhad currently operates as a private sector organisation, responsible for its revenue and some of its development activities.

With its service covering the length and breadth of the country, KTM Berhad runs its train on a metre gauge of 1000mm, over a track length of 2 226.90 kilometers.

KTM Berhad's main objective is to provide a modern, efficient and competitive rail transport system.

As of 1st August 1997, Marak Unggul - a consortium of Renong Berhad, Diversified Resources Berhad, Bolton Berhad and Jasa Meta - Joined hands with KTM Berhad in what has been termed as 'management partnering'. Management partnering can be regarded as a transition stage between corporatisation and privatisation. The objective is to complete the re-engineering which began in 1992.
